Welcome
to Leipzig
Leipzig is one of Germany’s cities with the largest population growth. A good 600,000 inhabitants, including almost 37,000 students, live in this extremely lively city. Greats such as Goethe, Bach, Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Leibniz, and Nietzsche knew it: Leipzig is a city of almost unlimited possibilities.
Even the area surrounding Leipzig is beyond fascinating. In just over a quarter of an hour, you can cycle to Leipzig’s “Neuseenland”, where the huge holes left by the former open-cast mine have been gradually flooded and a magnificent lake landscape created. This is a real leisure and recreation paradise!
Leipzig is a place of upheaval. During the political changes at the end of the 1980s, people here stood up against the injustice and arbitrary state power of the GDR. In 1989 they marched along the inner city ring road in large demonstrations. After the peaceful revolution and German reunification, Leipzig became a modern European city — and it is still going strong today.
Leipzig also stands for culture without end. Art, music, concerts, festivals, theatre, off-productions, children’s theatre, plus many fantastic cinemas where you can see big productions as well as lots of foreign language films, independent films, and great film series. Tip: With 300 films each year, the DOK International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film is one of the largest in Europe.
Another cultural recommendation is the Leipzig Book Fair and “Leipzig liest” (Leipzig Reads) with hundreds of venues throughout the city — plus plenty of parties. Enjoy classical music at the opera house and Gewandhaus, and everything else all over the city. Plus, there’s an unbeatable selection of pubs and bars — this is where you can come to live your student dream.
