1. What can you study and where?

Already know what you want to study? Great, you’ve taken the first step! Here we show you different subjects in subject groups, explain what they involve and list the universities where you can study these subjects.

This subject group deals with ecological, economic and technical topics. These include programmes in wood technology and wood management or landscape design, for example.

The degree programme is science-based, with subjects such as zoology, botany, physics and chemistry. Depending on the specialisation, economic and technical content may also be included.

  • Technische Universität Dresden
  • Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Dresden - University of Applied Sciences (HTW)
  • Saxony Cooperative State University (DHSN)

The social sciences deal with how people live together, and with social structures and political systems. Programmes such as social work, psychology, political science, education and sport deal with these topics from different perspectives. They combine theoretical knowledge with practical applications and deal with issues relating to social, political and economic aspects of life.

The art, music and design subject group comprises programmes that focus on creative work – such as painting, sculpture, dance and drama. However, there are also programmes that take a more theoretical approach to art and music, such as art history or musicology. This group of subjects is aimed at anyone who wants to express themselves artistically and creatively without studying to become a teacher.

First, think about what type of school you would like to teach at later and which subjects/specialisms/areas of focus you would like to choose. Whether primary school, secondary school, grammar school, vocational school or special needs school – there is a separate degree programme for each type of teaching profession. You will study your chosen subjects at your university, along with the relevant teaching methods and educational sciences (= educational science and educational psychology). In addition, you will gain initial practical experience during a teaching internship (school-based study). Your studies will conclude with the first state examination, which will pave the way for you to enter teaching practice and thus the teaching profession.

During your studies, you will focus intensively on your chosen subjects/specialisations/areas of focus. The training is comparable to a specialist degree programme, as teacher training is not exclusively about learning school-related content. During your studies, you will acquire specialist knowledge at an academic level and learn the relevant subject-specific methodology. Studying didactics will enable you to incorporate this specialist knowledge into your own teaching later on.

For primary school, you choose one subject and three primary school teaching methods. If you want to teach at secondary schools, grammar schools or vocational schools, you will choose two subjects/specialisations. For special needs education, you will choose two areas of specialisation and one subject or four primary school teaching methods. In educational sciences, you will learn about and discuss theories, models and concepts relating to schools, teaching and learning processes, and the teaching profession. Depending on your teaching degree, your studies will take between 8 and 10 semesters, but at the end you will not only have specialist knowledge, but also a wealth of valuable experience!

As the structure of teaching degree programmes is somewhat complex, the universities offer special advice services.

The mathematics and natural sciences subject group is all about understanding the world around us – from animate to inanimate nature. You’ll conduct experiments to discover connections and laws and explain them using models and theories. Mathematics is particularly important here. The knowledge you gain here forms the basis for new technologies and innovations and is needed in many areas, especially in engineering.

This subject group includes not only mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics, but also exciting fields of study such as neurosciences, nanosciences and environmental sciences.

The public administration subject area comprises degree programmes that specifically prepare students for a career in the public sector – particularly in the civil service. In Saxony, Meissen University of Applied Sciences and Further Education Centre and the University of Applied Police Sciences Saxony offer practical degree programmes with close links to the professional world.

At Meissen University of Applied Sciences, students gain qualifications for roles in Saxony’s state and local administration. The programmes combine law, economics and administrative science content with practical study phases in public authorities.

The University of Applied Police Sciences Saxony prepares students specifically for police work. In addition to legal and social principles, the programme also teaches practical skills and helps students develop the ability to act effectively in everyday police work.

This covers topics such as religion, literature, philosophy and their significance. If you want to study to become a teacher, you will find this in the teaching degree programme section. For everything to do with art, music or design, take a look at the art subject group.

The degree programmes in language and cultural studies are extremely diverse – from English and ethnology to philosophy and media studies. If you are interested in communication and language, there are also programmes such as linguistics.

The field of economic sciences examines how consumers, companies and the state manage their finances. There are two main areas: business administration (BWL) and economics (VWL). Business administration deals more with the processes in companies, while economics looks at the bigger picture in society. In addition to traditional programmes, there are also an increasing number of interdisciplinary, European or international degrees.

Law is about understanding and analysing laws and legal texts.
