Dates and
deadlines
This page provides an initial overview of the most important application dates and deadlines for starting your studies. Please note that these may vary depending on the university and degree programme. It is therefore advisable to find out the exact dates of your chosen university well in advance to ensure that you submit everything on time.
Degree programmes can generally be divided into three categories, each with its own rules and application procedures:
- Programmes with nationwide admission restrictions
- Programmes with local (university-specific) admission restrictions
- Programmes with no admission restrictions
There are nationwide admission restrictions for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine degree programmes. Study places are allocated via hochschulstart.de. It is important to note the deadline – for 'older school leavers' (general higher education entrance qualification completed before 16 January) the application deadline is 31 May, while 'new school leavers' (general higher education entrance qualification completed after 15 January) can apply until 15 July.
Degree programmes with university-specific admission restrictions
In addition to the degree programmes with nationwide admission restrictions, there are also many programmes with a so-called numerus clausus (NC) at individual universities. In this case, you apply directly to the respective university. The application period is usually between 15 May and 15 July, but please note that some universities set different deadlines depending on the year in which you completed your general higher education entrance qualification i.e. whether you completed it before or after 15 January. It is therefore always worth checking the website of your chosen university or enquiring directly.
And here’s another important tip: In some cases, the allocation of study places for degree programmes with university-specific admission restrictions can also be coordinated by hochschulstart.de. You should also find out about this in good time.
Degree programmes with no admission restrictions
If you are interested in a programme with no admission restrictions, the application process is usually a little more straightforward. You can simply enrol as long as you meet the admission requirements. Many programmes with no admission restrictions do not require any further application formalities – however, some universities require additional documents or evidence. Here too, it is advisable to contact the university early on to be on the safe side. The application period is often between 15 May and 15 September.
