Admission to a
degree programme
To start a degree programme, you need a higher education entrance qualification:
- General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur):
The Abitur entitles you to study at all universities. - Entrance qualification for studies at a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife):
This qualifies you to study at a university of applied sciences or at the Saxony Cooperative State University (DHSN). - Subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (Fachgebundene Hochschulreife):
With this qualification, you can study at a university of applied sciences or certain subjects at universities.
If you do not have a higher education entrance qualification, there are still ways to study: If you have passed a master craftsman’s examination or have completed certain other advanced vocational training courses and have attended a guidance interview at your chosen university, you will receive an entrance qualification equivalent to the Abitur. If you have completed initial vocational training and have at least three years of professional experience, you can take an entrance exam after a guidance interview. If you pass this, you can enrol in a subject-specific degree programme.
Unrestricted or restricted admission: What you need to know
For degree programmes with no admission requirements, you can enrol directly with your general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or other required entrance qualification. However, please note that even if a degree programme is listed as having no admission restrictions, there are usually aptitude tests for artistic, sports or language subjects, for example. For some programmes, proof of professional training, activities or certain language skills will play an important role in your admission.
Degree programmes that are in high demand, such as medicine or psychology, have admission restrictions, i.e. a numerus clausus (NC). The number of places on these programmes is limited, which means you have to apply specifically for them. Admission is granted through special procedures. The Foundation for University Admissions (SfH) is responsible for the central allocation of places on programmes with nationwide admission restrictions, such as medicine or pharmacy. The selection criteria, which can vary slightly depending on the university and programme, include Abitur grades, aptitude tests, professional qualifications and selection interviews.
