Higher education in Saxony

Exams in the bag and qualified for uni? Now the choice is yours: academic work and research, applied learning, expressing your artistic talents, or a combination of theory and practice. Each of these is represented by one of the four types of university in Saxony:

  • Universities,
  • Universities of applied sciences,
  • Universities, academies, and colleges of fine arts,
  • Universities of cooperative education.

Universities

Once regarded an “ivory tower”, universities are now no longer thought of as being remote and out of touch. Universities are driven by the principles of open research and academic work. Saxony is home to Leipzig University, along with three other technical universities: TUD Dresden University of Technology, Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz), and Freiberg University of Mining and Technology (TU Bergakademie Freiberg).

There are many degree programmes to choose from at universities. You can study anything from African studies to zoology. Technical universities are a special form of university. Among other things, they offer a wide range of natural science and engineering subjects. To study at a university or TU, you normally need a subject-specific or general higher education entrance qualification. But even if you don't have an Abitur, there are still opportunities to study in Saxony. Take a look here.

Universities of applied sciences

Students at a university tend to study theory, whereas the five universities of applied sciences in Saxony are somewhat closer to professional practice. Many of them cooperate with companies and conduct application-oriented research.

At universities of applied sciences, you can study traditional, mostly technical or business subjects, as well as very specialized degree programmes such as digital forensics or musical instrument making. The requirements for studying at a university of applied sciences are a general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), an entrance qualification for studies at a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife), or a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (Fachabitur).

Universities, academies, and colleges of fine arts

Talent, ability, and the will to perfect both of these — that’s how many creative young people begin their journey to a university, academy, or college of fine arts. Universities of arts and music train you in the visual, creative, and performing arts and in musical subjects.

At universities, academies, and colleges of fine arts, a general higher education entrance qualification is not the be-all and end-all. If you can prove your artistic talent in an aptitude test, the doors to the world of fine arts are open to you even without that. It’s not just about fostering your own creativity in isolation. Depending on your style, you will have the opportunity to perform with renowned orchestras or tread the boards in theatres.

Universities of cooperative education

Learn the practical side of things in a company, while the Saxony University of Cooperative Education teaches you the theory — and get paid for it too! If you opt for a university programme at one of the seven locations in Saxony, you will be awarded a bachelor’s degree or 'Diplom' after three years.

The knowledge you gain and your practical training will be rewarded: Graduates of the Saxony University of Cooperative Education traditionally have excellent chances of landing their dream job at a highly regarded company.
